Australia’s world champions Leigh Howard and Cameron Meyer have won the 101st edition of Berlin’s Six Days track cycle race in the German capital city.
The Australians, who had finished second last year, showed great stamina to set a good pace and took the title with 263 points ahead of Swiss pair Franco Marvulli and Silvan Dillier and Belgium’s Iljo Keiss and Kenny Ketele.
Both the Belgium and Swiss teams finished with 254 points.
At the packed velodrome in Berlin, Howard, 22, and Meyer, 24, were the first Australians to win Berlin’s Six Days since Danny Clark paired up with England’s Tony Doyle in 1988.
“We wanted this victory as a good omen to help us try for a third World Cup victory in a row at home in Melbourne,” said Leigh Howard.
“If we succeed, we want the rainbow jersey at the next Six Days in Berlin.”
Howard and Mayer won madison gold at both the 2010 world track cycling championships in Ballerup, Denmark, and last year’s event at Apeldoorn, in the Netherlands, and are aiming for a hat-trick in Melbourne from April 4-8.
