Greece’s head athletics coach Costas Spanidis was killed in a highway accident in the north of the country yesterday, police in the main outlying city of Thessaloniki said.
Spanidis, 51, died after his car collided with a van parked on the safety lane on the Thessaloniki-Moudania highway, the police said.
They added that the ambulance crew that reached the scene found no visible injuries, leading to suspicions that he may have suffered a fatal heart attack.
A coach to former discus champion Tassoula Kelesidou, Spanidis had been appointed to the post last year after a previous stint in 2005-2008.
