Alpine skiing: Vonn wins Super-G, WCup
Lindsey Vonn won the women’s Super-G title to be crowned overall World Cup champion for the third straight year in Garmisch-Partenkirchen yesterday.
The 100 points gives Vonn, the Olympic and world downhill champion, both the Super-G Crystal Globe for the season and her third title as overall World Cup winner for 2010.
Despite bruising her knee after a crash here in Thursday’s giant slalom, the United States starlet set the fastest time down the Kadahar course, which plays host to next year’s world championships, with a time of 1min 19.30sec.
Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl was second at 0.16sec with Swiss Nadia Styger third at 0.57sec, while Vonn’s main rival Maria Riesch of Germany was fourth at 0.59sec to finally settle the contest for the overall title.
With just the slalom event left to come on Saturday, worth 100 points, Vonn now has 1671 points compared to Reisch’s 1456 in second with Sweden’s Anja Paerson third on 1047 and Vonn’s 215 point lead can not be caught.
As the last skiier to race, Vonn led from the front and despite briefly falling behind Goergl’s earlier pace, she brought down her Super-G season in style after her downhill gold and Super-G bronze medal from last month’s Vancouver Winter Games.
