Do you know Macau? Chinese Festivities and the 24 Seasonal Division Points

In the ancient times, when people worked mainly in the farms, the Chinese made up a system dividing the year into 24 parts which was later named the 24 Seasonal Division Points or 24 Jieqi (二十四節氣). The system was developed according to their observation and the relationship they believed it existed between the sun and the earth. These points served as indicators of climate and season change or other natural phenomenon, which facilitated the planning of their work in the farm. Each of the 24 Seasonal Division Points or Jieqi has its own name and meaning. They are: Beginning of Spring (li chun, 立春), Rain Water (yu shui, 雨水), Waking of Insects (jing zhe, 惊蛰), Vernal or Spring Equinox (chun fen, 春分), Pure Brightness (qing ming, 清明), Grain Rain (gu yu, 谷雨), Beginning of Summer (li xia, 立夏), Grain Budding (xiao man, 小满), Grain in Ear (mang zhong, 芒种), Summer Solstice (xia zhi, 夏至), Slight Heat (xiao shu, 小 暑), Great Heat (da shu,大暑), Beginning of Autumn (li qiu, 立秋), Limit of Heat (chu shu, 处暑), White Dew (bai lu, 白露), Autumnal Equinox (qiu fen, 秋 分), Cold Dew (han lu, 寒露), Frost’s [...]
