Caritas to propose new elderly homes
Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On has commissioned the local association Caritas to present a report on its facilities for the elderly and disabled and its future plans. According to the secretary general of Caritas, Paul Pun, the association’s facilities did not meet these people’s needs and the new land reclamation areas could be a good option for additional housing.
Paul Pun had a meeting with the Chief Executive on Monday. “We discussed about the possible alternatives for the Caritas elderly, handicapped and mentally ill people’s homes. Society has changed much and it is getting older, so new facilities for our homes are needed. The proposal we will present includes a future plan to envisage people’s future needs,” he told the Macau Daily Times.
The new land reclamation areas could be the right choice to host the new homes. “I hope it would be a place for the new homes, but it depends on the Government,” he added.
The Central Government approved a proposal by the Macau government for a 3.61 square kilometre land reclamation project, last year. It plans to reclaim land off the northern coast of Taipa, across the front of the Ocean Gardens area and in the Pac-On area and also near the Macau-Zhuhai border area.
Caritas will gather the opinions of the residents it houses concerning the way the services could be improved.
Currently, Caritas runs four elderly homes and four facilities for the disabled. All together, it houses 1,000 people.
