Heavy rains throughout yesterday afternoon triggered floods and a landslide in various places across the city and weather forecasters warn of further rains today. After hours of heavy downpours, beginning in the early evening yesterday, flooding was witnessed in numerous places in the lower districts. According to TDM, flooded areas included streets in the old neighborhood near Praça de Ponte e Horta, which is a black spot for flooding in the rain and typhoon season. Rua do Almirante Sérgio is one of the places that has been seriously flooded; others include several roads near the Border Gate and the Pantane area. In Taipa, numerous streets near the Sports Stadium were flooded. Some car parks in lower districts or underground parking lots, including the bus terminus underneath the Border Gate crossing point were also flooded. The authority activated the flooding contingency plan to divert traffic to unaffected areas, and urged drivers to avoid going to affected areas. The downpour also triggered a landslide in Taipa and felled some trees in Taipa, near Estrada da Ponta da Cabrita. The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued thunderstorm warnings and a rainstorm signal, and expected occasional rains for today.
