Yu Zhengsheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo and Director of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), gave a warning yesterday to Macau and Hong Kong CPPCC deputies. The mainland political leader stressed that the two special administrative regions (SARs) are autonomous, but not independent, according to TDM. Yu made the remarks in his meeting with the deputies, during which he urged them to unite the compatriot forces and to stand firm and support the SAR governments’ governance in major issues. He also promised continuous support by central government on the SARs’ economic development.  According Ambrose So, Yu Zhengsheng became aware of conflicts (within the SARs), but he also believed that it was in everyone’s interest to overcome these differences. “He said that there are various conflicts and differences of opinion in the two territories, which he said was normal. “It’s important that governments win the support of the population for its policies to resolve these conflicts.” Leonel Alves was quoted as saying “I think that is a reflection of what is happening right now in Hong Kong”. Francis Lui interpreted Yu’s remarks as a request for the two SARs to put aside their differences in the interests of the people.
