The Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway will operate from the first day of 2013 (next Tuesday) and connects Border Gate to the city of Guangzhou in just 80 minutes, where passengers can transit to the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway inaugurated on Wednesday. Yesterday the operator of Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway, the Guangzhou Railway Group, invited media for a trial ride on the light rail system that links the Gongbei Port of Zhuhai (or the Border Gate in Macau’s side) to the Guangzhou South Station, where passengers can take the high-speed train to Beijing in just 8 hours. The Intercity Railway will cut the journey between Border Gate and Guangzhou by at least 40 minutes as the current coaches take more than two hours for the trip even when there is no major congestion. The tickets for first and second class seats are RMB44 and RMB36 respectively, providing a cheaper alternative to coach tickets. Some coach operators are cutting prices on a large scale to compete with the railway.
