New subsidy for university students
The government is expecting to spend about MOP 66 million this academic year on a new subsidy to help around 33,000 university students buy textbooks and other school materials. The MOP 2,000 one-time subsidy was announced on Friday by the Executive Council.
All residents studying in local or outside universities will be able to apply until April 30 through the Tertiary Education Services Office’s (GAES) website. A hotline will also provide assistance in English, Chinese and Portuguese languages.
The subsidy will be issued two months after the students submit the necessary paperwork proving they are attending higher education studies. “It will help lessen the burden on families,” the GAES director explained.
Sou Chio Fai said authorities are not yet sure whether the subsidy will become permanent in the future. “For now it’s a trial project that will also allow us to gather data on our students, particularly on those studying outside of Macau,” he added.
