Meanwhile the commission will launch a drama campaign in local schools to warn teenagers against ‘compensated dating’. “We are very concerned with the Internet and social network activities of teenagers,” Lei conceded.
The initiative is scheduled for March and will reach around 15 schools in the secondary education system. “The play will try to discuss this phenomenon [compensated dating], as well as the social values that are behind it,” she said.
The commission has also set up a channel on the popular CTM forums “with all information on sex”. “We have tried to promote our views on compensated dating and safe sex,” the SSM official said.
Last October a 21-year-old student was raped and robbed in the first case of compensated dating ever reported in Macau. The girl had left her contact number on an Internet forum to try to attract costumers and make extra money. She agreed to meet the alleged rapist at his home.
Compensated dating originated in Japan, where it usually referred to older men paying for the company of younger women. Cases have also been widely reported in neighbouring Hong Kong, Taiwan and in major mainland Chinese cities.
Women involved in compensated dating usually find costumers through Internet ads or social networks. In many cases the dates also involve consensual sex.
At this point the commission has no ongoing studies or data on compensated dating in Macau, Choi confirmed.
