Chief Executive meets head of EU

The Chief Executive met yesterday with the European Union (EU) president, as part of his first visit to EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. Chui Sai On and José Manuel Durão Barroso exchanged views on enhancing ties between Macau and the EU.
The meeting was the highlight of the second day of the six-day trip, which began with a reception hosted by the deputy prime-minister of Belgium, Didier Reynders.
During the first day, the delegation visited Macau’s Economic and Trade Office to the EU in Brussels, accompanied by the office’s director, Raimundo Arrais do Rosário. In the evening, Chui met the head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, Wang Hongjian, and the representative of the Chinese embassy in Belgium, Chen Xiaoming.
During his visit, the Chief Executive is also scheduled to make a courtesy call on the vice president of the European Parliament, Libor Roucek.
The Macau delegation includes the secretary for Administration and Justice, Florinda Chan, the vice president of the Legislative Assembly, Ho Iat Seng and the Chief Executive’s chief of office, Alexis Tam Chon Weng.
This is Chui’s first visit to the EU as Chief Executive since he assumed office in 2009. His predecessor, Edmund Ho Hau Wah, went twice to Brussels, the last visit was in June 2006.
While the Chief Executive is away, his official duties will be taken up by the secretary for Economy and Finance, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, and by the secretary for Security, Cheong Kuoc Vá, tomorrow and on Friday.
