Calls to reopen Ilha Verde stalls

The Ilha Verde Neighbourhood Association has called on the government to soon reopen the two old eateries that have been taken down to make room for public housing projects in the northern district.
Association representative Ieong Tat Wai said that the government should open the stalls based on the current focus on developing creative and cultural industries.
“These two eateries are one of a kind,” Ieong said quoted by TDM News. “Many residents would drive just to go there. Tourists would look for them on the map. We need to figure out how to preserve their uniqueness,” he said.
He also called on authorities to monitor the construction progress of the public housing project.
One of the two eateries was demolished on Sunday, even though the government and the coffee shop owners failed to reach an agreement on compensation.
It was the last remaining shack at the Ilha Verde area where thousands of shacks once stood. The plot was cleared out by a developer, but not without incidents.
