Over a year the government’s cross-departmental working team has sealed 152 premises suspected of providing accommodation illegally.
The law on ‘Prohibition of Providing Illegal Accommodation’ took effect on August 13, 2010, and to date a total of 1029 premises were inspected, the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) said Monday.
According to the bureau, a total of 219 allegedly illegal inns actually closed down their operations when the new law came into force, “proving that the new law had a deterrent effect”.
The task force acknowledged that there were some challenges, such as small changes to the operating pattern, but the MGTO is now adjusting its strategy “to cope with the new situation”.
“MGTO is also recruiting staff to further step up enforcement and improve efficiency,” they said.
The bureau has placed a total of 152 sanctions and 46 operators were fined MOP 200,000 each, but only 2 voluntarily paid the fine within the statutory period.
