Robotic surgery and other minimally invasive surgical techniques will be the focus of the second series of the Sino-Luso International Medical Forum to be held in Macau on August 14-16.
The three-day forum will include keynote presentations and skills training programs, namely on tele-robotic arms that have been developed for surgeons to use in operation theatres.
Two simulation educationalists from Sweden and Australia will lead simulation-training workshops on laparoscopic surgery, in which operations in the abdomen are performed through incisions up to 1.5 centimetres. This technique can be used on diseases of colon, liver, urological issues, thyroid and kidney.
The event chaired by Macau University of Science and Technology’s Faculty of Health Sciences will include keynote speakers, surgical experts and trainers from Portugal, Sweden, Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
According to Macau Healthcare Management and Promotion Association, it will be “a great opportunity” for local physicians to gather with “high level surgeons” and to learn about the latest advancements of minimally invasive surgical techniques into many specialties.
An entire forum will give an overview of the latest development of minimally invasive surgical procedures in Macau and how to move toward an international standard in the future.
The discussion will include Chan Wai Sin, deputy director of the Health Bureau and director of public hospital Conde São Januário, but also “a strong team of Macau experts in the field”.
Macau would serve as a great platform to enhance the dynamics and connections amongst the Portuguese speaking communities in the region, the organiser adds.
One of the keynote speakers will be Henrique Castelo, president of the Portuguese Surgical Society, who will talk about “Teaching Surgery in the 21st Century”.
The forum is also supported by the Chinese Ministry of Health.
