The Housing Bureau (IH) has warned the 637 households that they could be forced to move out of the social housing units if their monthly income continues to exceed the cap as stipulated by law.
According to the 25/2009 Administrative Regulation regarding the allocation, leasing and management of social housing, a household’s monthly total income cannot go beyond the ceiling for three consecutive years, or amount to twice the upper limit, or otherwise the IH has the right to unilaterally terminate the leasing contract when it expires, the bureau said in a statement yesterday.
At present, among the 5,791 social housing households, 637 are making an income exceeding the cap, and of them 108 are earning more than double of the limit.
Between January and August 2010, the bureau has renewed the leasing contracts with 618 households. Of which, 327 were required to pay higher rents with an average increase of 182 percent, and 162 have their rents reduced by an average of 46 percent.
