Coming Sunday, on the 28th, Fifteen day of the First Moon, people traditionally celebrate the Lanterns Festival, ending the Lunar New Year festivities.
The occasion is also regarded in many places as the real beginning of Spring, according to folk tradition.
The Albergue SCM Creative Lab is to mark the occasion by exhibiting lanterns, many lanterns, some traditional ones made by artisan Sou Va Kui, one of the most renowned (if not the only left) local maker of these unique objects cherished by the Chinese, made of bamboo frame, silk and paper.
A group of 20 artists, among local architects, designers and others will also present their concept and reinvention of the traditional model of the single four-wheeled paper-rabbit that still linger in the memories of those born and raised in Macau and southern China.
Adalberto Tenreiro, Afredo Cenyas, Américo das Neves, António Conceição Júnior, Carlos Marreiros, Eddie Wong, Farah Marreiros, Filipa Simões, Freeman Lau, João Jorge Magalhães, Joey Ho, John Tsui, Kan Tai Keung, Keith Pang, Luís Sá Cunha, Manuel CS, Marta Sismeiro, Mónica Fonseca, Alexandra Cardoso, Regine Chong, Ung Vai Meng, Vicente Bravo and Wilson Lam designed the ‘new’ lanterns.
The Chinese Lanterns Festival is said to date back to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C – 221 A.C), and became quite popular during the Tang and Song Dynasties. It is a family celebration that gathers together people, young and old and the Albergue is set to do its part to help preserve it, following the Lanterns Exhibition that marked the Mid-Autumn Festival last year.
Besides the opening of this “Traditional & Creative Rabbit Lanterns - An Exhibition by Carlos Marreiros & Friends Part 2”, there will be a Chinese paintings and calligraphy live performance and popular riddles are to be said. Traditional lanterns will be offered to all children attending.
Event starts at 7.30 pm. The exhibition is on until March 29.
