Get ready to shake your bottom!
“It is not that easy to shake your bottom. But if you can, please come to our concert”.
The invitation comes from Conductor (the artistic name of Andro Carvalho), one of the Portuguese band Buraka Som Sistema’s vocals. They perform tonight, at 8 pm, at the Mount Fortress, and promise to make a big big party.
Buraka Som Sistema is an electronic music project from Portugal that is already conquering the world. Specializing in the Angolan kuduro genre, they are generally credited with creating the “progressive kuduro” variant. However, Conductor told the Macau Daily Times the band doesn’t agree completely with this label.
“Our music is electronic. Portuguese media wanted to get another genre to fit us in, so they called us a kuduro band. But we would rather call it kuduro progressive, because our music is a little bit different from the Angolan-made Kuduro”, he explained.
Kuduro is their basis. Actually, each one of Buraka Som Sistema’s elements has different musical influences. They are from Lisbon’s suburbs and grew up listening to different kinds of dance music, such as blind, dumstep, kizomba, hip hop, samba and drum’n’bass. The band is a fusion all these music genres.
So that’s what expects the Macau audience tonight: “Wegue wegue” from their latest album “Black Diamond” or “Yah” are just some of the hits people will hear ... and dance to.
“We will perform our ordinary concert. Mix several songs as we don’t work with isolated themes. People have to sing them loud and shake their bottoms”, Conductor explained.
If you don’t understand Portuguese, don’t worry! Language it not a key to enjoy a Buraka Som Sistema’s concert.
“In electronic music, language it’s not important at all. What really counts is the quality of the music. And that is reflected in how the audiences reacts to our music, that usually is good”, he added.
Buraka Som Sistema were awarded an MTV European Music Award, in 2008, for the best Portuguese act. After Macau, they are off to the United States, where they will be on tour for three weeks.
