Offbeat: ‘Piggy bank-gate’ in Taiwan campaign

Taiwan authorities last week reminded opposition presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen not to receive money from minors, after a group of children reportedly donated their piggy banks to her campaign.
The Control Yuan, the top government watchdog, said it had contacted Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for a “kindly reminder” after media reports on Friday said she had accepted the children’s offer of their piggy banks at a rally.
According to Taiwanese law, those who are not eligible to vote, or under the age of 18, are barred from giving political donations, it said.
The DPP said it had returned the piggy banks and accused the Control Yuan of failing to stay neutral in the election.
Tsai is running against the incumbent Ma Ying-jeou in the January 2012 election to become Taiwan’s first woman president.
