Fai Chi Kei Radio ‘wants U’
After completing their studies and getting experience overseas, four friends came back to Macau. Holding different degrees, they settled down here again and decided to join hands for the sake of a new and fresh project. So, Fai Chi Kei Radio is now online on Facebook and from October it will test its website in Macau and whoever wants to listen to it.
Fai Chi Kei Radio aspires to be a new channel for creative people, not only musicians but also people from other artistic backgrounds. People can listen to several diverse music channels via the website or through their mobile phones. “We want to set up a creative hub,” Miguel Khan explained to the Macau Daily Times.
Fai Chi Kei Radio is willing to take advantage of the cultural exchange that happens daily in Macau and to embrace different kind of ideas. For a start, it is welcoming contributors who want to show their work to a wider audience.
“We are creating a new and different channel. There is a niche of the market that is not fulfilled yet,” Carlos Machado stressed.
“There are a lot of good things [happening] in Macau, but it seems like they are a little scattered. There are people working in several areas and despite knowing each other there are not enough ways to bring their projects ahead,” Sérgio Rola added.
The project targets young people who have ideas but lack the stage to display them to an audience. “[Fai Chi Kei Radio] it’s a way for these people to show their work in a very shy way and get some feedback,” Miguel Khan pointed out.
They are looking for fresh and new products, less mainstream and as alternative and creative as possible. Apart from the radio, the website’s goal is to tell people what’s on, such as parties, concerts and other sorts of cultural events.
“It isn’t only a radio. We will try to promote people and projects of Macau,” Carlos Machado added.
Eyeing the Delta
Sérgio Rola is a sound editor. He got the idea for the radio and is in charge of the broadcasting and playlists.
Back in London, where he completed his studies, he worked on a similar project for the school. “It was a Music Business project. We wanted to do live streaming and broadcast of clubs’ DJ sets so people could listen to it in their homes,” he said.
That was almost five years ago. Sérgio returned to Portugal, where he suggested the project to some of the Fai Chi Kei group living in the country at that time. “I always had a special interest in music, just like all of us,” he stressed.
But the idea did not go ahead. It was reborn eventually in Macau during gathering of friends last February.
Carlos Machado holds a degree in marketing and is helping in the communications area. Miguel Khan is a motion graphic designer and he’s in charge of the website design and graphics, while Beto Ritchie is a program Web developer and musician.
In the future, Fai Chi Kei aims not only to become a more comprehensive project but also to cross borders. “If there is people from this region interested in the project, they can also contribute,” Beto Ritchie stressed.
As for the investment, Fai Chi Kei Radio takes more time than money, thanks to the technology nowadays.
Curious about the name? Fai Chi Kei sounds as ‘made in Macau’ to the four friends.
“It’s [the name of] an emblematic neighbourhood and represents the working class”, Sérgio Rola told. According to Beto Ritchie, “it’s the most tough neighbourhood of Macau”, while Carlos Machado feels that “it’s a name that spells something apart from the touristic part of the city”.
