Taiwan Soong rules out quitting election
Taiwan independent presidential candidate James Soong yesterday ruled out quitting the race despite claims he is diverting crucial support away from pro-Beijing incumbent Ma Ying-jeou.
Soong, whose support base overlaps with Ma’s, also dismissed rumors that his election bid was aimed to help Tsai Ing-wen of the anti-China opposition, whose candidacy is seen as benefiting from Soong’s campaign.
“I want to get elected myself. That’s why I joined the election,” he said in a press conference drawing dozens of reporters from Taiwan and abroad.
“I decided to join the polls because I feel Ma is incompetent while Tsai is inexperienced.”
The candidacy of Soong, a 69-year-old former senior member of the Kuomintang, has caused jitters in the Ma camp because of overlapping support bases, with some fearing it could cost him his reelection.
