Corporate News: Westin: Thai food fit for a king
Until September 19, Macau Thai food fans will have one more place to add to their list. After an Indonesian Food Promotion, Café Panorama at the Coloane Westin Resort will host two award-winning Thai chefs who learned from Sopong Nubian, the current head chef to the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Tongtip Poungsri has been working for the last 16 years at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok, both with Western and local cuisine. But it’s the Thai food that has taken her all around the world in the last few years. Japan, Malaysia, Greece, Indonesia and Bangladesh – as well as Beijing – are all places where Thai cuisine has made many fans, she says.
Orawan Wannadilok’s career at the Sheraton in Bangkok is still young but she has already won a gold medal for fusion food at the Thailand Culinary Gathering of Cooks in 2008. However, the menu put together at Coloane is all about traditional Thai cuisine, with a great focus on seafood and curry. “We have a large Thai community in Macau so it’s easy to get all the original ingredients flown in from Thailand,” she said.
The only Western influence will be felt at the Friday and Saturday dinner buffet, set at MOP 268 for adults and MOP 148 for children. Besides the Thai desserts like ripe mango with sticky rice and coconut and egg jelly, the menu will include more conventional sweets such as ice cream and tiramisu.
In addition to the buffet, Westin will offer a-la-carte lunch Monday through Saturday and a-la-carte dinner Sunday through Thursday, with main dishes from MOP 85 to 118. The Thai food fans could also win two-night stays at the Sheraton hotels in Bangkok, Shenzhen or Chengdu as part of a lucky draw.
