Landslide death toll rises to 17
The death toll in a massive landslide in north China rose to 17 today, as the hopes of finding 11 missing people alive were narrowing, state press reported.
The disaster occurred early Wednesday when the side of a steep mountain came crashing down in a remote part of Shaanxi province, burying up to 25 homes, Xinhua news agency said.
Rescuers had pulled out 16 survivors from the disaster by late Wednesday, but said Thursday the hopes of finding any more were slim.
Up to 400 firemen, police and mine safety workers were using heavy earth moving machines to search through the debris.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the landslide.
